Caol Ila

A staple powerhouse of Islay scotch whisky.
Brand Overhaul + Bottle Design (Concept Work)

A Concept I designed for Caol Ila. Including a modern redesigned logo, matte black textured finish and refreshed bottle shape.

A personal project, unfortunately, not working with them.....yet.

Caol Ila, pronounced "Cull-Eela" is derived from the Gaelic meaning "Sound of Islay" Referring to the location of the distillery which overlooks the strait between Islay and Jura. My concept design pays homage to the waves of the strait and focuses heavily on typography, resulting in a contemporary adaptation of the brand.

Caol Ila 12 year old.

Bringing this wonderful Caol Ila single malt into the modern era. Focusing heavily on bold typography, a vibrant pop of colour and the sleek matt black bottle. A Bottle fit for any whisky lover's shelf.

A whisky fanatic myself, I believe contemporary design in the whisky world is few and far between. As whisky is a highly traditional technique, I feel most companies stick to an equally traditional aesthetic.

My goal is to change that.

Caol Ila logo.

As it stands the Caol Ila branding is very minimal and traditional. I think the words Caol Ila deserve to stand out. It's a unique Gaelic word and deserves a unique eye-catching design. My concept is derived from the Sound of Islay. The spacing between the over lapping letters signifies the land parallel to one another, and the waves are the water of the sound. I decided to retain the deep red colour of the original Caol Ila branding to uphold that sense of tradition juxtaposed with the new crisp white lines - the new beginning of the modern era. The logo in its purest form would be just the typography. I then went on to create larger artistic variants with the island of Islay in the background.
